About the Course Books

RETA study course workbooks, supplemented by instructor's presentation tools, provide widely used training aids designed specifically for the ammonia refrigeration industry. Thousands of these courses have been supplied to RETA local chapters for in-plant training programs, individual home study and use as textbooks in universities, junior colleges and trade schools.A final exam is taken at the end of each RETA course. The lessons conclude with feedback questions to test understanding of the information presented.

Refrigeration Series 

This multi-book series is primarily for refrigeration plant personnel. It is specifically designed as a foundation study to help individuals become knowledgeable and proficient in the safe, effective and efficient operation of industrial refrigeration systems. The following areas are addressed: fundamental items and concepts used by the refrigeration plant operator in the course of duty, the refrigeration cycle, physical properties of various refrigerants, refrigerant performance tables, compressor types, compressor operation and maintenance, lubrication, cooling units, condensers and high pressure receivers and purging non-condensable gases from the refrigeration system. Diagrams, tables, study questions, exams and a glossary help the student bring key concepts into focus. The RETA CARO and CIRO examinations draw from these coursebooks (except for IR-3) for test content.

Industrial Refrigeration I (also available in Spanish)

Revised and expanded in 2010, this 10-chapter course is designed for refrigeration plant personnel. It is a foundation course that will help individuals become knowledgeable and proficient in refrigeration systems. Topics include fundamental items and concepts used by the refrigeration plant operator in the course of duty, the refrigeration cycle, physical properties of various refrigerants, refrigerant performance tables, compressor types, compressor operation and maintenance, lubrication, cooling units, condensers and high pressure receivers and purging non-condensable gases from the refrigeration system. Diagrams, tables, study questions, exams and a glossary help the student bring key concepts into focus.

 

Industrial Refrigeration II

 

Revised in 2012, this eight-chapter course builds on concepts in Industrial Refrigeration I, including liquid feed to evaporators and vessels, direct expansion evaporators, gravity flooded evaporators, pumped liquid recirculation systems, secondary refrigerants, heat exchangers and pressure enthalpy diagrams, and two-stage and defrost systems. The RETA CIRO examination draws from this coursebook for test content.

 

Industrial Refrigeration III (Maintenance & Related Items)

 

Revised in 2016, this is the book that the old timers wish they had twenty years ago. The newly released IR-3 is a study course and a reference manual for the novice and the old pro. The book is 481 pages covering major topics such as: Safety; Compressors-Control Systems. Initial Start-up, Alignment, Oil Separator and Coalescing Filter Element Maintenance; Condenser sand Cooling Towers, Vessels, Piping, Valves and Controls; Insulation-Inspection and Maintenance; Electrical Service, Motors, Motor Starters and Variable Frequency Drives; Shaft and Bearing Maintenance and more. At the beginning of each chapter there is a highlight box with Mechanical Integrity Notes for the chapter. The text includes numerous references to manufacture websites for specific equipment information. This is a valuable addition to the reference library of operators and technicians.

 

 

Industrial Refrigeration IV (Plant Operation & Safety)

 

This timeless 148-page book provides guidance for refrigeration plant engineers and operators in important areas of day-to-day operations. Share the first three chapters with your managers as there is important regulatory information in these chapters. The RETA CARO and CIRO examinations draw from this coursebook for test content.

 

Electricity Series 

 

Basic Electricity I

 

Revised in 2013 - Covers basic, nonmathematical approach to understanding principles of electricity. Introduces electron theory, static electricity, electrons in motion, and magnetism. Covers basic methods of measuring current, voltage, and resistance. Explains circuit components conductors, insulators, resistors, capacitors and simple Ohm's Law calculations for DC and AC circuits.

 

Basic Electricity II (Ladder Diagrams)

 

This 70-page book, which includes a large fold-out diagram for an actual rotary screw compressor control circuit, explains the fundamental lines and symbols used in ladder diagrams and also covers the principles of operation and symbols for switches, timers, potential devices used in refrigeration systems, alarm circuits, defrost cycles, and troubleshooting.

 

Electrical Troubleshooting (Also available in Spanish)

 

Covers use of schematic diagrams, determining sequence of operation, and use of building diagrams and single-line diagrams.Includes troubleshooting procedures for control circuit and combination starters and DC and AC motors, identifying unmarked leads on three-phase delta and Y-connected motors, and troubleshooting lighting systems.

Control Theory and Fundamentals

 

Part I of the two-volume course includes basic control theory, temperature sensitive power elements, electrical linkages, actuators and electrical components, residential and commercial industrial controls, valve and damper theory selection.

Part II contains 209 pages of text material and full-page study diagrams. Lessons include central fan system, pneumatic control systems, solid state fundamentals, solid state control systems, and fluidic controls.

Reading Schematics and Symbols

 

Covers all types of schematics and symbols used in commercial and industrial settings including electrical symbols and diagrams, piping symbols and diagrams, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams and symbols. Discusses air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including explanations of electrical/electronic control schematics. Covers welding and joining symbols.

Understanding Basic Mechanics

 

Covers force and motion, work and energy, and fluid mechanics as applied in industrial maintenance. Explains principles of operation for simple machines, such as the lever, inclined plane, wheel and axle, pulley and screw. Explains the basic elements of industrial machines, as well as common measurement tools used to monitor and adjust equipment. Covers hand tools, power tools and fasteners, and ways to reduce friction and wear.

Troubleshooting Skills

 

Explores troubleshooting and the importance of proper maintenance procedures. Focuses on specific maintenance tasks, breakdown maintenance, and planned maintenance. Covers working with others and trade responsibilities and outlines troubleshooting techniques and aids, using schematics and symbols.

Energy Conservation 

 

Industrial Refrigeration Energy Efficiency Guidebook - Industrial Refrigeration Consortium, University of Wisconsin - Madison 

This seven chapter manual is used as couse book material in IRC's Industrial Refrigeration Energy Efficiency program. There is an overview of systems and equipment, evaluating system performance, improvements on the high side and low side, compressors and, other considerations. This manual was updated in 2010 and is available through the RETA library.

Industrial Refrigeration Best Practices Guide - Cascade Energy Engineering

 

This six chapter guide is written for a wide audience from system owners and regional managers of food processing companies to those who operate industrial refrigeration systems, to design engineers and installation contractors. The Best Practices Guide is used as course content for regional seminars and plant-specific energy use and improvement projects. This manual is available through the RETA library.

 

Energy Conservation Basics

 

Covers energy sources and the history of energy usage. Examines alternative energy sources and their feasibility. Identifies current energy usage patterns and places where energy can be conserved. Explains how to recognize energy waste, and includes sample corrective actions. Explains how to conduct an energy survey.

Electrical Energy Conservation

 

Covers electrical energy consumers in typical commercial and industrial facilities. Investigates utility rate structures and relates cost to load management. Examines power factors, including how they are calculated and how they affect energy usage. Shows methods of conducting lighting surveys and how lighting fixture and lamp selection can impact electricity costs.

Safety and Regulation 

 

Ammonia Refrigeration Compliance Guideline

The Ammonia Refrigeration Compliance Guideline provides a brief history of the regulations, and provides guidance to develop and maintain the required programs, training, and documentation. It will help an operator at any level of experience to understand the why of the requirements, and how to have those requirements in place, so as to be in compliance when an audit happens.

 

What You Don't Know Can (And Will) Hurt You

 

This bulletin is short in length and has a 25 question test that you may send to RETA HQ for scoring and a certificate of achievement. This should be the first publication to study when beginning your educational process in industrial refrigeration. The information is applicable to public or volunteer first responder engine companies (use it to inform your local fire department about the refrigerant you use).

Industrial Safety and Health (Also available in Spanish)

 

Explains government involvement in ensuring a safe workplace. Discusses personal protective equipment and fire safety. Includes expanded coverage of many health hazards. Covers ergonomics, environmental responsibility, and importance of maintaining a safe work environment.

 

I.I.A.R. Removing Oil From an Ammonia Refrigeration System (Date: 1999)

 

This new training module instructs system operators in the most important maintenance procedure routinely performed -- the safe draining of oil. Since this process is also the most common, it is imperative that system operators are properly trained with up-to-date oil draining guidelines.
